Reading and Understanding Poetry

The U3A has had a Poetry Appreciation Group for a number of years, based in the Thornhill area. It has been very successful, with a mixture of members, most of whom had no specialist knowledge of poetry when the group was set up. It is now proposed to see if there is sufficient interest to start another group based in Dumfries.

The format would be to choose a general topic for each session, some of which would be general e.g. what is poetry? and some just subjective e.g. poems about the four seasons, war poetry, humour, friendship etc.

Members would generally choose appropriate poems to be read aloud and discussed, with some guidance from the leader – this has worked well in the past and has introduced members to a very wide range of rewarding literature - it is also lively and good fun!

I would hope that there would be two meetings per month somewhere in the Dumfries area, the arrangements to be finalised at an initial meeting early in September, provided that there is sufficient interest.

Contact this website for more information.

The U3A in Dumfries now has 235 members. The U3A as a whole has 687 branches with 206,355 members. This is a phenomenal growth rate - long may it continue.

If you haven't visited the national U3A website before, then I would urge you to investigate the wealth of information there for members and non-members. It really is a wonderfully comprehensive website - you'll be surprised what's on offer.

I especially recommend a look at the photography competition. SEE THE 12 PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2008 WINNING PHOTOGRAPHS! THESE HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED INTO THE U3A 2009 U3A CALENDAR. Visit www.u3a.org.uk and on the Home menu click on Calendar 2009 to see the most fantastic photographs. So imaginative, colourful and inspiring. The calendar example given on the website shows it to be colourful and well laid out with spaces for appointments etc. and only costs £5 including p&p.

Maybe next year the U3A in Dumfries could find members with photographic talent to enter.
