For those new to the University of the Third Age, the U3A
aims to encourage people in their 'Third Age' who are no longer in
full-time employment, to engage in educational, creative and leisure
activities at minimal cost by making use of the skills and knowledge
of its members, within a charitable status. Since we learn for the pleasure of it, no
qualifications are required and none are given.
Interest groups
are led by members with a special knowledge or interest in the
subject they lead, so individual members are both learners AND
teachers, giving their services freely. There are also monthly
meetings for part of the year, with guest speakers - the
syllabus for the 2009/2010 season can be found under the link
Monthly Meetings.
The Dumfries
U3A is part of a national organisation.
In the
UK at the start of 2010 there were 753 braches with
231,419 members and growing at a rate of one new branch per week. The U3A in Dumfries
in 2009 had around 280 members.
The new subscription year began on 1st January 2010 and is £14 per
annum which entitles members to attend any U3A in the UK, and
from June there is a discount rate of £7 for the half year.
This covers the cost of a local Dumfries produced magazine twice a
year, and a nationally produced magazine four times a year.
We would
be pleased to send you a Welcome Pack with lots more information about
the U3A.
