U3A Dumfries Interest Groups Available for 2012

Please use the Contact Us link to make enquiries about individual groups.

  Art - Practical Art - Painting and drawing with watercolour, pastels, pen and ink and other media - not oils (too messy!).  Help and encouragement from the group leader and other members. 

Group 1 meets every Monday

Oct to April - 2-4pm Lockerbie Library. 
Group 2 meets weekly on Fridays Sept to April - 10am-12 noon at Gracefield.

 
  Book Group 1 - A book is chosen by the group each month for discussion at the next meeting.   Intended to cover a wide range from classical works to modern fiction.   There are facilities to share books or obtain multiple copies from the library.    

Third Wednesday every month 

2pm-4pm       

 
  Book Group 2 - The Alternative Book Group - This group brings together like-minded people who enjoy reading.  Members can share their individual book choices with a view to introducing each other to new authors and genre. Last Thursday in each month

2pm-4pm.  Held at members homes.

 
 

Camera Club - The group is aimed at people with a basic knowledge of photography who wish to improve the quality of their photographs and who wish to gain a better understanding of the principles involved in digital photography.  

2nd Fridays in each month

10am - on location and in members homes

 
  Cinema/Film Appreciation Group - Meets to discuss all aspects of film and cinema,  based on a particular film or group of films which will be agreed at the meetings, depending on local availability.     

Third Friday of each month - Sept - April

2pm - 4pm.  Held at members homes.

 

 

  Dancing for Fun  - All levels of dancing experience welcomed - we learn from each other.  Partners not necessary.

2nd and 4th Wednesdays

Oct to end March - 2pm-4pm at St Teresa's Hall

 
 

Discussion Group Meets in Dumfries for a discussion on topical issues.  A sociable, friendly group. 

2nd Tues monthly

Sept to April  - 10.30am-12.30pm.

 
  French - Conversational French - Learning and practicing French - suitable for a range of abilities but some knowledge of the language essential.  Friendly group meetings.      

Weekly on Thursdays except U3A monthly meeting days

2pm-4pm - St Teresa's Hall, Dumfries 

 
  French 2 - NEW GROUP - Mixed attainment group welcoming  any member who wishes to improve their French irrespective of their standard, including beginners.      

2nd & 4th Mondays - 2pm - 4pm in members' homes 

 
 

Gardening Group 1  - Visits to gardens, both private and public, involving either a half-day or full day out depending on location, sometimes with guided tour.  Meetings always incorporate a relaxed lunch giving time for a discussion.

Last Friday each month

April to October - various venues

 
  Gardening Group 2 -  A warm welcome for garden-lovers to enjoy Dumfries & Galloway’s garden gems, both public and private. Either full or half day visits which include an informal lunch in a friendly atmosphere. Good gardens, good company, good food.

1st Friday each month

April to December - various venues

 
 

Gardening - Practical Gardening - Members will share their gardening knowledge and experience with others.  Experienced and inexperienced alike can learn more about all aspects of gardening and horticulture, sharing their interests.

3rd Thursday of each month - 1pm - 3pm in Dumfries

October to March with occasional summer meetings

 
  History - Slices of History - Group exploring various aspects of history for a chosen time range, eg art, music, engineering, sciences.  Members take it in turns to be leader.    

First Thursday each month

Sept to April - 10.30am-12.30pm at Gracefield.

 
  Music Appreciation  - Listening to and discussing wide diversity of music selected by a group member each month, meeting in that person's home.  

First Friday each month - 

Sept to April - 2pm-4pm - in members' homes

 
 

Music - Desert Island Music - this group  explores a wide variety of music genres.  

Third Monday of every month

Sept to May – 10.30am-12.30pm - meeting in members’ homes.

 
  Philosophy For Fun  - Light-hearted discussion of ethical issues with reference to philosophers ancient and modern.  No prior knowledge of philosophy required. 1st and 3rd Monday every month - Sept to May - 2pm-4pm - Dumfries                         
 

Poetry Lovers - Reading and discussion of poetry for pleasure.  No experience required, just enthusiasm.  Each member selects and reads poems on a topic selected by the group at the previous meeting.  Members welcome.

2nd and 4th Tuesdays - 2pm - 4pm - Dumfries - September to May  
 

SingAlong Singing purely for pleasure – no experience necessary.  Sessions include a mix of traditional songs and old favourites as well as pop, country and western and popular songs from films and shows.     

2nd Monday of each month

October to March - 2pm-4pm in Dumfries

 
 

Theatre-going Group - The aim of this group is to organise group outings to theatrical events in Dumfries and Galloway, and further afield.  Whenever possible, we will hire a coach, or share transport.

Throughout the year.  
  Walking - Ambling - For those interested in less strenuous walking.    Easy walks of about 3 miles in length.  1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month, usually 10.30am at various local venues.  
  Walking (Nature Lovers)  - Walking with the emphasis on scenery and wildlife.  Generally not strenuous, averaging around 5 miles.  Full walking gear required.           1st and 3rd Tuesday every month - assembling at Dock Park car park, Dumfries                     
  Walking ('Over the Hill Mob') - Hill walking of various grades, around 7-9 miles.  Walks are chosen and led by experienced members on an ad hoc basis. 4th Wednesday every month - meeting at various locations - shared transport leaving from Dumfries       
  Writing Together - Members seek to improve their skills in creative writing, both prose and poetry.   Topics are chosen by the group in advance and members' work is read and discussed in a spirit of mutual help and support.
